How can I reupholster a bar stool?

Unless the fabric or vinyl on it already is really painful, you can put new fabric or vinyl over it. You need a good staple gun (electric better than manual, but not totally necessary. Purchase a strong fabric, such as upholstery fabric, duck cloth or canvas, but nothing thin like calico. Then remove the seat from the base and get your tools in a handy place.
To staple it over the seat, center the seat upside down on the fabric and pull up one spot. Staple it in place. Then staple the spot directly opposite it, pulling very snuggly. Then do the 2 centers in between. Keep working your way around, pulling in the fabric tightly and evenly between your first 4 staples. When you're done, trim the fabric underneath and then reattach your seat to the base. Voila!
