What Are The Reasons Of Copper Oxidization?
The process of oxidization is familiar to us. A reddish brown flaky layer is produced by iron, white flakes are produced by aluminum, air and moisture makes apple turn brown for some time. Just like this, copper also oxidizes.
As iron turns rust when exposed to air and moisture during oxidization, copper changes to green when exposed to oxygen. In this case, water is not necessary for oxidization of copper and it does not even react with water.
From peachy pink to green
The original color of copper is pink or peachy with a metallic shine. Only oxidization can make it turn green. The question arises that why copper turn green when oxidized. During the process of oxidation, the elements lose electrons that are usually hydrogen while reacting with other elements.
In this case, copper reacts with oxygen forming copper oxide which is of green color. A coating is formed on the surface that is called copper patina. A protective layer around the copper is actually formed by the patina. Further oxidation is prevented by this oxidized layer that can result in corrosion. The reason why copper is considered very important metal is because of its resistance to corrosion.
Other things that make copper change color
Besides oxygen, copper oxidizes after getting exposed to chemicals. A formula consisting of Copper Nitrate, Ammonium Chloride, Calcium Chloride and water can produce that weathered green appearance on copper.
This solution has to be mixed carefully and then bathe with the copper parts. The solution has to be left to dry on the copper surface. A solution of Liver of Sulphur has to be heated and often sold in the form of solid dry stones. It is enough to dissolve one stone in water for a 600ml solution. It has to be put in a spray bottle and applied on the copper surface while heating it up with a torch. After finishing spraying the surface, gently rubbing the surface with a wet scourer for a sufficient time will bring out an even light brown color. Then the surface has to be reheated while applying a weak Ferric Nitrate. This will make the color redden and darken the brown and after finishing, the surface has to be coated with either clear coat or floor wax.
Caution
Copper patinas have different shades of blue, green, brown and red. One can have fun to create these colors using chemicals and some people suggest using bleach. However, one has to be very careful not to mix dangerous chemicals with bleach. This can result in production of noxious gases poisoning anyone in the room.
