Golden Slipper Stakes - A 'Foothold' on Gold for Punters
The world's richest horse race for two-year old Thoroughbreds is undoubtedly the Golden Slipper Stakes, held on the first Saturday in April at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. The Group 1, 1200 meter sprint event is worth $3.5 million in prize money and is held on what is known as the Golden Slipper Day which features four Group 1 races namely The BMW, the Arrowfield Stud Stakes, the George Ryder Stakes, and the Queen of the Turf Stakes.
Many of you will probably have punted on a 'stakes' race, even if you weren't sure what the term meant. Stakes races often offer a larger prize purse than other races because of the combined entry fees and attract high quality fields. You can therefore hope to profit by placing your own stake on such a race.
The Golden Slipper has an illustrious history, with the very best two-year olds in the country making it to the starting gate. The multi-million dollar stakes is a far cry from the 20,000 pounds in prize money in 1957. The first Golden Slipper Stakes was won by Todman, by Star Kingdom who sired the next four winners of the Golden Slipper Stakes. Ridden by N. Sellwood, the colt romped home by 8 lengths and started 6 to 1 on. The Stakes has also been a favourite hunting ground for jockey Shane Dye who managed four consecutive wins from 1989 to 1992 during which he steered Courtza, Canny Lad, Tierce, and Burst, to victory, respectively. Jockey R. Quinton also brought home for winners, riding Marscay in 1982, Sir Dapper in 1983, Rory's Jester in 1985, and Marauding in 1987. Trainer T. J. Smith achieved great success in the Golden Slipper Stakes, bringing six horses to victory. Smith is followed by Bart Cummings also with six wins and subsequently by Mick Dittman, Kevin Langby and Athol Mulley with three wins.
Many Golden Slipper winners have moved on to become stars of the turf, making it the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup. Australian ace jockey Darren Beadman steered Guineas to victory in the Golden Slipper in 1997. Beadman now enjoys a place in the Australian Horse Racing Hall of Fame.
The Golden Slipper sees plenty of betting activity and has always been a favourite with punters. The betting markets open early, however, most often, the top stables bring out a two-year old at the last moment that runs in good time and gets the better of its rivals. Therefore, punters need to be cautious when punting up on what they fancy. Here is one tip for punters - males have a better record over females with 11 wins in the last 20 editions of the Golden Slipper Stakes. Taking things a bit further, of the 54 races until date, 31 titles have gone to colts and geldings while fillies have managed 23 Golden Slippers. Not enough to help you place a bet yet?
Crystal Lily won the 2010 edition of the Golden Slipper Stakes, following the footsteps of Ha Ha in 2001. These are the only two to complete the Sweet Embrace Stakes - Golden Slipper double.
