The History and Use of Cutlery
Cutlery is mainly used in the western world for preparing, serving and eating food. It also goes by the name of flatware or silverware. The industry in Birmingham tended to make swords called long cutlers while those in Sheffield made knifes. Traditionally cutlery was made of silver but when new steelmaking methods were developed stainless steel began to be used for everyday cutlery.
The main piece of cutlery has always been the knife as it was not until the 14th century that the fork began to be used. Knives were first used by hunters and then they eventually made their way into the kitchen. Many of the older companies such as henckels was founded in 1731 and is known for their craftsmanship. Today traditional cutlery is on the same level as crystal glasses and porcelain, only to be used for special occasions.
