Wood For Woodworking Projects
If you need wood for woordworking, you have many types of wood where you can aces from. Depending on what you are going to make, you select the kind of wood that you need. There are softer woods, hard woods, woods that are good for shaping, carving and painting as an end result and then you got the more exotic woods.
First we are going to talk about the soft woods. The most common soft woods are pine, fir, spruce, hemlock, cedar and redwood. These woods are often used for home construction projects. Redwood is often used for outdoor projects and since it is naturally rot resistant it's very good wood to use for outdoor projects.
Next we are going to talk about some hardwoods like maple, cherry, birch, ash, oak, walnut and poplar. The most common woods of these are oak and poplar. Working with hardwood is different than working with soft wood. It's hard to drive a screw through hardwood without first drilling a hole in it. To shape hardwoods you need good and extremely sharp tools. Hard woods are often used for furniture projects.
The next type of woods are softer woods. They are easy to shape and carve, and after that painted to have a nice finish. Basswood it's often used in carving projects and has to be coated to harden or placed in a way so it won't get dented.
The next type of woods are the more exotic woods. They often come from different countries. And from the rainforests. Rosewood is one of them, it's extremely dense and very heavy. Another kind of exotic wood is mahogany and it's one of the softer exotic woods. Some other exotic woods are teak and zebrawood. Zebrawood is named after its dark stripes and has a very nice decorative finish. And as last you got bubinga wood, this is also often used for furniture because of its nice wood pattern. All these types of exotic woods are in most cases the most expensive woods that you can buy.
As last type of wood there is plywood. Plywood is created of an uneven number of alternating layers of wood, or a type of manufactured sheet. The two most common manufactured plywood's used are MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and Particle Board. Both are made from wood particles, combined with glue and bonded under pressure.
So each type of wood has its own density, colour, patterns and resistance. Depending on what woodworking project you are going to do you pick your wood on these 4 qualities. Each of the woods that we talked about are good woods for woodworking.
