5 Beautiful Flowering Ground Covers
If you want to plant a beautiful garden, but don't want the hassle of maintaining it (and just want the flowering blooms that create a colorful playground in your yard), think about flowering ground covers. You can find a large variety of flowering ground covers from places like Gardens Alive! and Brecks that are easy to plant, easy to care for and absolutely delightful to look at. So, if you are ready to enjoy a care free garden, take a look below at some of the wonderful choices you have when it comes to planting flowering ground covers.
1. Herrenhausen Oregano
These herb ground covers have greenish purple leaves and can be planted in the early Spring. By the time Summer arrives, you will be enjoying 18" stalks that have gorgeous pink flowers surrounded by deep purple bracts. By Fall, the leaves change to a reddish purple color. The plant is pretty sturdy, able to withstand droughts and tough climate conditions.
2. Dianthus Baths Pink
This type of ground cover is easily planted in a variety of soils. The plant thrives best in full sun light but can handle a bit of shade. The cover prefers a more alkaline based soil and can tolerate humidity, heat and even drought fairly well. It will bloom gorgeous pink flowers throughout the Spring, Summer and into the Fall--just remove dead blooms to make room for the new ones.
3. Walkers Low Cat Mint
When you use Walkers low Cat Mint in your garden, you can expect a burst of bright purple throughout the season. The flowers bloom throughout the Spring into late Summer and will cascade over rock walls, droop over pots or be used to stand up to 18" tall as a border for your rose garden. The clusters of purple flowers are perched upon a stem that will stand upright and be noticed. If you want to lay them down for a drooping effect, they bend nicely to create a cascade effect. These attract hummingbirds and butterflies, but beware they can also attract bees.
4. Geranium Rozanne
Geraniums are easy-to-care-for plants that offers up some amazing colorful blooms all season long, but the Rozanne offers the longest blooms for any type of geranium and has the most amazing blue blooms. These can be planted in full sun or partial shade and in a variety of soil conditions. Expect that once these are planted, each year you will notice they have spread throughout your garden creating a cool effect of low flowering cover.
5. Aster Oblongifolius October Skies
If you are looking for a full low to the ground cover that offers tons of flowers, this is your plant. You will enjoy the sky blue flowers that bloom on this massive bushing plant. The cover is a slow spreading cover and will not take over your garden like some others will, so this is a good choice for those who want to maintain control of the garden and what grows in it.
