How To Select A Flute
The flute is a member of the wind family of music instruments. Originally, the first flutes were made of wood. In modern times, materials such as silver and other metals are used to make the instrument. A novice flute learner will usually start with a closed-hole silver-plated flute with a C foot joint. In this article, I will outline the points you need to note in selecting your flute.
1. Budget
How much you have set aside to buy your flute determines whether you get a student level one, or a branded one which is hand crafted and comes with beautiful set up. If you are serious about learning the flute, I strongly recommend you invest in one which gives a good tonal quality. If your budget is low, you may consider renting the instrument first.
2. Research
If you have acquaintances or friend who play the flute, do ask them for their opinion of certain makes in the market and how each instrument plays. If you already have a music teacher, seek his or her opinion. Of course the final decision lies with you since your playing style will determine the instrument which you select.
3. Material
Flutes are made from a wide range of metals. The student model flutes usually are made of zinc, copper and silver. Hand crafter flutes are more expensive since these are made from platinum gold or solid silver.
For a novice player, starting out with a student level model may be better since the type of metal used does not affect the sound of the instrument that much.
4. Accessories
Your flute should come with a sturdy case and a swab to clean the instrument after each use. You can also get a soft polishing cloth to clean the exterior of the flute.
Finally, after purchasing your flute, you will need to look for an experienced teach to guide you on the proper techniques of playing the instrument.
