How To Use A Food Sealer
Saving food with a food sealer is a great way to save on grocery costs and create a long lasting supply of food for you and your family. If you're not too familiar with using this type of appliance, then here are some helpful tips on how to use a food sealer.
Using a food sealer is actually quite simple to do. Here are a few simple steps for sealing food items that you plan on saving.
1. Arrange the food items.
The first thing you should do when using a food sealer is arrange the food items that you plan on sealing into piles or groups. Arrange your items in groupings large enough to fill a package, but no too large that it becomes impossible to properly seal the package.
For meats, the general rule of thumb is to package about 1 pound of meat together at a single time. Vegetables can be packed to together so that they fill a package about the size of a plastic sandwich bag. This will ensure the most freshness from your sealing activities.
2. Prepare the packaging.
The next step in the food sealing process is preparing the packaging that your food will be stored in. In most cases you will be using packing that comes on a role, so all you have to do is roll out the amount of packaging that you need for each group of food and then cut it to suit. One thing to keep in mind is that you should leave about 2 or three inches of space to account for shrinkage and bulk of the food items.
When you have all of the individual bags ready, you'll then have to seal one side of the plastic so that you can put the food into the bag in order to be sealed. Place one end of the bag on the food sealer and seal it according to the sealing instructions that are provided in the owners manual.
3. Fill the packages and seal.
When all of the individual packages are ready, fill each one with the pre-arranged groups of food that you arranged earlier. After filling the packages, you can proceed to sealing each one according to the instructions that are given to you.
When each package is sealed, place those items that need to be frozen in the freezer, and place dry food items on your pantry shelf or wherever it is that you store dry food items.

I've had two Food Savers, the first one was a long time ago when they first came out and we wore that one out! Now we have the Food Saver Professional II. I have no complaints about it. It works as advertised. The only problem with a Food Saver is the same problem you have with a printer. You have to continually buy bags (printer ink) for it. So it continues to cost you as you use it. Pretty clever product marketing if you ask me! Once you get hooked on it, you can't be without the bags and they are not cheap. We mostly use the big ones, so we always run out of those first and then have all these little ones left. My son (he's an adult) always cuts the bags way too big and we end up wasting as lot of the roll of bags. If you seal up stuff with moisture in it, like hamburger, you do have to cut the bags bigger because the vacuum sucks the moisture upward and if it gets wet in the area where you place the seal, the seal will not be secure. He just got in the habit of doing it, and now he does it on everything he seals. He does most of the sealing, so I can't complain too much. You can also use just the sealer and not the vacuum to reseal things you purchase in plastic bags like walnuts, mixed green salad mix, powdered sugar, etc. You can't use the vacuum on those flimsy bags, but the heat will reseal the bag and help keep things fresh longer. You can always move the product to a sealer bag, but I find I miss the product bag as it makes finding it in the cupboard easier. Some folks may reuse the bags but we don't. Too much trouble to clean, dry and store them. Happy sealing!
