Is the Drinking Water Container You Are Using a Threat to Your Health?
It never fails. Just when you think you are doing something good for your body, you find out otherwise.
You need to know that it is not a good idea to purchase drinking water containers that are made out of plastic unless it is clearly labeled "BPA Free." The best material for a drinking water container would undoubtedly be glass, but the transport of glass can sometimes be impractical.
If you are going to buy drinking water containers made out of any material, I'm hoping that you are going the extra step of only filling them with purified water.
As I said above, if these vessels are made of a polycarbonate or plastic material and do not say that they are BPA free, then you're still going to end up drinking contaminated water no matter what the source was.
Back in the 1930's, Bisphenol-A began to be used in the production of various plastics. There was some concern at that time that BPA might be a hazardous substance, but the benefits that plastic provided outweighed the potential risks of toxicity.
As is the attitude with many dangerous new chemicals, our health takes a back seat to progress.
Now we know that it is in fact dangerous. BPA can disrupt the endocrine system, and has been shown to have carcinogenic effects.
This is why it is a good idea not to buy a drinking water container that contains this chemical. Repeated use of plastic bottles leads to chemical breakdown, and these chemicals seep into our water.
When BPA gets into the body it has estrogen-like effects. Studies have shown that the rise in estrogenic activity increases the risk of breast tumors.
Even when given in small doses to laboratory rats, the chemical caused structural changes to the genital tract, the prostate, and breast tissue.
There were more problems also noted.
There were changes to the basic structure of the brain, and behavioral changes were also seen. Coinciding with the rise in estrogen activity, a subsequent decrease in testosterone in the males was noted.
This was all caused by small daily doses over a period of time, and these are the same results that you can expect unless you buy BPA free drinking water containers.
Studies conducted by the Center for Disease Control showed that 90% of the people tested in the survey had a measurable amount of BPA in their systems. Many of those people studied in the survey were children.
There is something else that you may have to worry about even if you get a BPA free drinking water container:
There is another compound used in the production of plastic drinking water containers that is also an estrogen booster. This chemical is called phthalate. So even if your product is BPA free, you're still going to get a dose of this.
The bad news is that if you were someone that bought bottled water, as millions of us did, then you are getting hit twice.
Get yourself a home water purifier, and bottle your water up in glass drinking water containers. There is a company online that has both the bottles, and a handy carrier. That way you don't have to worry about transporting it.
Steer clear of plastic altogether. It's simply not good for you.
