Silver Jewelry Handmade By The Karen Hill Tribe People Of Thailand

Karen People

It is believed that the Karen Hill Tribe people were originally from Tibet. There are said to be approximately 400,000 Karen Hill Tribe people living in the hills of Northern Thailand, and another 7 million in Burma. They live off the land, making simple houses out of bamboo, and raising animals such as pigs and chickens that live under their houses. The Karen have been known to use elephants to clear the land for farming, and have since established an infamous reputation as elephant trainers or mahouts. You can find Karen people in the northern provinces of Thailand, in the mountains around the Thai cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai as well as the area known as "The Golden Triangle".

Hill Tribe Silver

Karen hill tribe silver beads, charms and jewelry making components are hand crafted with high content silver ranging between 95% to 99.9% in purity (Sterling Silver is only 92% pure). Designs are assembled by soldering pieces together using elements that can bring forth the best bond. In almost all instances, Karen craftsmen mix their own soldering solution by combining Bronze (copper + tin compound) for strength and Silver to retain the lustre of the design. Asia-Charisma sells both retail individual jewelry pieces as well as wholesale components for silver jewelry. Prices range from $1.46 /gram to $1.20/gram for wholesale purchases. Many of Asia-Charisma's customers purchase pure silver beads and components for making silver jewelry. There are over 500 different designs of silver charms, beads, bracelets, pendants, rings and earrings listed for sale on their website.

KAFA Aid Program

Asia Charisma is a partner in the Karen Artisan and Family Aid Program (KAFA) which is designed to assist not the entire village but several families simultaneously. They believe in the Fair Trade Organization, however as a small business in a competitive market, they feel that adding additional cost in the form of registering fees and other policies likely would not be a benefit to their company and their artisans. The KAFA program is designed to help build confidence in each Karen artisan and improve their family's working conditions so that they can conserve the art for the next generation of Karen craftsmen. Customers can shop at Asia-Charisma.net and feel that they have made a responsible purchase from a reputable company and know that the money is going back into the Hill Tribe community.

i need holiday gift wrapping ideas?

i am on a low budget this year so i have decided that people are going to be getting baked goods and handmade chocolates and candy for xmas. I usually package baked goods in items such as bakery bags and boxes with windows, flower pots, glass jars with screw top, and flip top lids, baking pans, coffee mugs, tins, and brown craft bags with handles. I always decorate them with florals dried leaves or flowers, bells and ribbon, hand painted paper cutouts, and rubber stamping. I like to layer the cookies and place a piece of deckled edge wax paper between each cookie all wrapped in tissue paper or cloth. I am wanting some new ideas that will inspire. I love to give baked goods that look like they came fresh from the bakery to folks. I think that the packaging can be as important as the contents. I love a pretty face. i was also wanting some ideas that were very high end looking as well as fun and unusual. thanks so much for your help..

Baskets, or make your own paper baskets:

Here is an easy basket tutorial: http://www.allfreecrafts.com/easter/paper-basket.shtml

You can use shredded paper as filling.

Paper ornaments, like these ( http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2008/12/paper-flower-ornaments.html ) would look great as gift tags.

Another gift tag idea that you can make: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/11/diy-project-eco-happy-pom-pom-gift-topper.html

Print your designs onto heat transfer paper, then transfer to cloth materials.

Design on glass jars: http://www.designspongeonline.com/2008/12/diy-project-kaytes-centerpiece.html
(You can also buy adhesive rub-ons for this purpose, or stick labels on them)

You have a lot of good ideas! :)
