I have a few problems I need help with...?
I can't figure this out... can anyone help me by working them out and showing me how they are done?
1. A 6400 Ib truck was following a 1600 Ib sports car on the highway. Suddenly the car braked. In order to avoid a collision the truck had to change from 60 mph to 30 mph in 2.5 seconds. How much stopping force was required?
2. Sue was slicing Vidalia onions and her eyes were tearing up. A 1.4 gram teardrop fell 0.6 meters and splattered onto the kitchen counter top. How much momentum did the tear impart to the counter top? (Ignore air resistance.) .... I think I use P=mv? But I couldn't figure it out.
3. How much kinetic energy does a 3200 Ib car have when traveling at 60 mph?
1. Find the acceleration...
acceleration = change in velocity/time
change mph to ft/s
60 mi/hr x 1 mi/5280 ft x 3600 sec/hr = 40.9 ft/s
30 mi/hr x 1 mi/5280 ft x 3600 sec/hr = 20.5 ft/s
a = (40.9 - 20.5)/2.5 = 8.2 ft/s*2
Use F=ma to find stopping force
F = 6400(8.2) = 52 500 ft-lb/s*2
2. Find the velocity of the teardrop
vf*2 = vo*2 + 2ay
vf*2 = 0 + 2(9.8 m/s*2)(0.6 m)
vf = 3.43 m/s
Yes, use p = mv to find momentum
p = 0.0014 kg(3.43 m/s) = 0.005 kgm/s
3. Kinetic Energy = 1/2mv*2 = 1/2(3200)(40.9)*2 = 2.7 x 10*6 lb-m*2/s*2
