Gourmet cooking is the pursuit of passionate cuisine
There is cooking and then there is gourmet cooking. The difference lies in a love of foods and the presentation of fine foods. Viva la difference! (Long live the difference) because by adding passion to food preparation a cook elevates their work to a higher level. A true gourmet is one who has a refined palate and discriminating taste. In other words, they love to eat but are picky about what they eat. One who is considered a gourmet cook is someone who chooses to take the art of cooking to a higher level than the average Sunday dinner.
Gourmet foods have been "in" since the 1980's
The United States saw a definite move toward more refined foods in the 1980's and the result was the ability to find high quality foods of premium quality in many super markets across the country. Europe had already been aware of how special certain foods were when prepared using only the best of ingredients and to certain high standards. Culinary arts took a huge leap when those chefs who were trained at the topmost culinary schools began to prepare foods according to their own personal taste and style. We saw the superstar chef becoming a celebrity based on their individual expertise and popularity.
Television: The boob tube to the widescreen LED gourmet
Cable television now offers such programming as found on the Food Network, Bravo, and The Travel Channel that provide a look into the fascinating world of gourmet cooking. Wolfgang Puck, Emeril, Bobby Flay, Gordon Ramsay, and Guy Fieri are not only considered excellent chefs in their own right, but they have become celebrities equal to any movie star today thanks to widespread exposure on television. Not all of the "professional" chefs today have been to culinary school but they each have possessed that passion to cook since they were children pestering their mom in the kitchen.
Gourmet cooking combines passion with good taste
Cooking dinner can be a chore or a joy depending on the attitude of the cook. Throwing together some burger helper can work for a harried mom who needs to feed a brood of hungry mouths before they head off to the ball game. But weekend meals can become unique dining experiences when a little time is taken to plan out and prepare a meal. A hamburger steak can become chopped sirloin with mushroom gravy or some beef tenderloins pounded down to thin strips can become Steak Diane. Sauces and gravies can greatly enhance simple foods. It is a matter of a little bit of preparation and following recipes that can easily be found for free on the internet or in cookbooks.
Top quality ingredients involve freshness
Gourmet cooking is all about the ingredients and those ingredients include a cook who cares about what they serve their guests as well as their family. The best of ingredients can be found at a local super market as long as they are fresh and of high quality. Look for the greenest of greens and the reddest of tomatoes and peppers. Firm onions, peppers, tomatoes, and fruits are usually going to supply the finest recipe ingredients. Then it's up to the cook to put their heart into preparing their finest gourmet cooking experience.

Do you know where to buy Le Creuset and other speciality cookware in Bangkok? I haven't found a gourmet cook-devoted store yet, and the selection at Siam Paragon is limited (Staub but no Le Creuset).

There's a reasonably good shop for appliances on Wireless, next to All Seasons. Strangely I've also got a pretty good range of neat utensils from the Japanese '60 baht' shops that are in most of the Central malls.
There are lots of overseas chefs and GMs in the hotels so I wonder whether it's worth calling them because they're sure to know all the good places. Good luck.
