Whole Foods Multi-vitamin/Supplement for Children?
I'm looking to supplement a mostly organic, natural, well-rounded diet for total health and immune system support for our kids (ages 2 and 5). Our views on health are not mainstream. Even a liquid or powder would be a consideration. I'm so confused with all the different vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, bioflaviniods, etc. Any help would be appreciated.
I am not a really big advocate of supplements, unless your doctor personally prescribes them. Years ago we were firm believers that these were necessary to help in case there is something that is missing in your diet. However, there are recent studies that are finding that these vitamins aren’t essential UNLESS you have a very restricted (i.e. poor) diet. As a parent of a 2 year old, I don’t offer any supplement. An example with Vitamin A if offered in a higher dosage than needed to a child can cause liver damage and/or insufficiency of the bones.
Remember that vitamins aren’t mandated by the same strict regulations that are stipulated by the FDA for other medications.
If you are really adamant about offering an enhancement to your children’s diet, I would sit down with their pediatrician, tell him/her what your kids are eating, and ask him/her what s/he thinks.
