Glass Pie Plates For Cookery
Although many glass items are not designed to withstand heat, glass pie plates are not made of the normal glass that will shatter easily. They are made of tempered glass and as a result, there are no concerns about putting them in the oven. They are not expensive to buy and are not as elegant as many pie plates, but they do a good job and are an asset to any cook. They are considered the best dish to make a pastry in as you cannot only see that the pastry is even when you first put the base in, but can watch how evenly it cooks.
They come in various sizes – eight, nine and ten" and various depths. Pie plates tend to be 2" deep, whereas those that you would normally use for quiche or cooking chicken pieces and the like will be 1 ½". Unlike some plates they are not non stick, so some sort of oil may need to be rubbed around it to stop the items sticking if you have not used a lot of shortening in the crust.
If you are cooking a pie in a glass pie plate you will need to drop the temperature by about 25 degrees. Glass conducts heat better than metal does, so by cooking at a higher temperature the food will either cook unevenly or overcook. The pastry could burn and the entire pie will be ruined. Even though the plate can be used in very hot and very cold temperatures, it is not possible to go straight from one to the other.
A hot dish that goes straight into cold water or one right out of the freezer into hot water will more than likely get a crack in it. They are not expensive to replace, but it is still a waste, plus the food that is in it will be ruined. There may be shards of glass in it and this can be fatal if eaten.
They are easy to clean and if prepared properly before use, simply washing them with soap and water will clean them up nicely. They are usually dishwasher proof and this makes them even easier to clean. It is best to rewash the normal way if there are stubborn stains, as using wire wool will scratch the glass and germs could get in.As well as all the advantages of these glass appliances when the pastry is cooking, there are also advantages when you want to cut it.
There is less chance of damaging the bottom of a glass dish when the knife goes in than there would be if it was metal or ceramic. Finally, the acidity of the fruit will have no bearing at all on the color of the glass plate. A final advantage to using glass pie plates is the fact that you can also make cakes in it and again monitor how they are cooking. It should only be half filled as the heat will make the sponge rise perfectly.

Can I use a pie plate or something in place of a gold pan?
I am taking my kids out and panning for gold today, I can't find any gold pans in my area, can I use anything else? Any helpful tips would be great also.

"...The best way to learn how to pan for gold is to first get the right kind of gold pan. The steel gold pans of old are still made, but most actual miners and prospectors use plastic gold pans. The colored plastic pans show the gold better than the shiny surface of a steel pan, and plastic pans can be molded with “cheater riffles” that make it easier to pan and still not lose the gold. In general green is considered one of the best colors for a gold pan as it contrasts well both with the gold and the sand .
More care must be used when washing as the last bit of material remains in the pan. One wrong scoop and everything in the pan will go in the tub! If this kind of practice does not take place before going out to do some actual gold panning, the chances for any kind of success are very minimal. The new prospector will have no idea if there was gold in the material they have chosen to pan. When nothing is found, they will have no idea if it is because of poor panning technique.
