There are various kinds of placemats that are available in the market. If you go out to shop for a mat, you will be exposed to a thousand options. These mats can come in different materials like wood, bamboo, cork, lenin, knits, paper, beading, plastic and so on. And there are numerous varieties in the shapes and sizes of these mats as well. These mats are often very flexible and so they can be folded or rolled for storing purposes. You can find them in a lot of geometrical shapes like round, square, rectangle, oval. And then there are various unusual designs as well like octagonal mats that can also been seen at times.
Many restaurants use temporary placemats that are replaced every time after use. Temporary placemats can have the restaurant information given on them. need some assistance for xmas table setting..?
I'm hosting lunch for about 26 people (20 adults, 6 children b/w 2-12). They will be on 3 separate tables in the 1 room. Lunch is going to be buffet style set up in an adjacent room.
My query is this:
option 1 : no placemats, no plates, just centre decorations, bonbons, glasses etc
option 2: have placemats with no plates set on them (plates would be in room with the food so people can help themselves)
option 3: have placemats and plates set on the tables (means they have to carry them which i dont like but it will look good)

I'd go with either #1 or #2, depending on if you like place mats! I generally dress the table as I want be it with place mats or a cloth or a runner, decorate it and call it good enough. Now for the kids table, I would definitely use place mats or a nice looking plastic or vinyl cloth. And I always put extra napkins on the table; it's amazing how many people forget to pick them up in the buffet line!
And don't forget the salt and pepper shakers on the table! Happiest of holidays!
