There is a big variety of options that serve this purpose. First of all, you should carefully choose the web browser. The default browser for Windows is, as you may already know, Internet Explorer. There are a lot of options available on all the Internet browsers that you can use to change what it should allow or not. However, you should learn the usage of the features because they are different for different types of users.
You do not need to be a computer expert in order to adjust some settings the right way for you. You just need to do a little Internet research and you will find all the answers to your questions. It is advisable to spend a little time with this because it could save you a lot of time and money in the future.

In order to enhance your browser security you should practice safe browsing. This means you should not browse pages you do not know or those that look dubious. When you are browsing a website, information is exchanged between you and the website. Therefore your computer and location can easily be found.
One tip that applies to all web browsers is the security level setting. It is recommended that you set this security level to medium-high or high on most browsers unless you know what you are doing by setting it lower. In IE, this can be found by going to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security.
In conclusion, the web browsers are the gates of connecting to the Internet, so you should make them as safe as possible. It can be easy or hard to that depending on your web browser choice and ability to learn.

The most popular internet browser?
Just a quick survey. I, myself, use the new Apple Safari. What do you use and why?
Popular or best?
Micros!ht IE is probably most popular (because it's automatically included in every copy of windows 95, windows 98, windows 2000, windows xp, windows ME (Unless you live in Europe)
Best among popular ones? is probably firefox.
Most popular among macintosh users? probably Safari......
If you turn the time back to 1996, it would be Netscape.
here is the study on browsers
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_web_browsers
Internet Explorer (72.22%)
Mozilla Firefox (19.48%)
Safari (6.39%)
Opera (0.71%)
Netscape (0.68%)
Chrome (0.26%)
Other (0.26%)
It's interesting that if you turn the time back to 1996, Netscape account for 89.36% of the market while Microsoft IE only account for 3.76% (AND IE sucks big time back then, it keep crashing on my windows 95 machine) Netscape included thing called "cooltalk" which allow iphone calling (Internet phone, not apple's iphone) and you get pretty clear connection at 14.4 kbps. IE have this thing called "netmeeting" which is pretty good too (with white board feature that allow 2 people interact with each other with a white board on screen, whatever you write the other side see it right away!) that's the only best thing about IE back then, that's it. and now they get rid of "netmeeting" and replace it with this MSN messanger craps.....and cooltak no longer existed....
