Over the past few years, most homeowners have opted for granite countertops. With the current trend going on in the building industry, many homebuilders are now turning to other attractive countertop materials. They are already getting tired of the traditional hard stone countertops. Glass countertops are one of the alternative countertops that are growing in popularity nowadays. Glass can be manufactured so that they can be as hard and durable as any hard stone. Just put in the necessary components and provide it with sufficient thickness and it can carry a reasonable amount of weight you will require.
Glass countertops are usually ¾ inch to 1.5 inches thick. The thickness needs to be at least 0.75" for it to be considered a solid surface. If you go higher than 1.5 inches, you will have a glass as strong and as tough as any hard stone. One good thing about glass is that you can recycle them, anytime they are destroyed. Your hot pots and pans will not be a problem with your glass countertop surface. Glass needs no sealing or lamination so you have no expense for these items. The process of glass making gives you a wide variety of colors and textures to choose from. You can easily pick a design that will best suit your existing home décor. Back-lighting is an attractive option for a glass countertop. This will make your countertop very special and unique.
You also need to be careful about certain things if you want your glass countertops to last long. Glass can get cracked and scratched, so extra care is essential. Always watch out for unattended water or liquid on the surface. Wipe them dry at once or they will leave unsightly marks that are difficult to take out. It might be able to support you weight, but that doesn't mean that you should sit on it. They are made for countertop functions, not for sitting. Don't forget that glass is quite expensive, so you will need to take good care of it in order for it to last a long time.
Glass, with the right thickness and when properly tempered, can really support a reasonable amount of weight that you will put on top of it. Several hundred pounds are no problem as long as the glass is adequately supported by a platform and countertop brackets. Normally, it can also withstand 700º of heat so there's no worry about your hot pots and pans deforming its surface.

Sure as they do not get much hotter tan 120 d F, if they did they would cook the fruits and veg before drying them, I bought my mother one and see use it for a few years, gave it up in a garage sale a few years back, wishes now she had not with the high prices of fruit and veg now.
