What are rare earth magnets? For many people the term "rare earth" makes them sound like mysterious elements. Actually, these are not very rare at all. They are used in many different industries, by scientists, and by magic illusionists. They are even used as toys for children who are interested in the arts and sciences. These magnets rare earth are also used in electronics like computers. They are a fun and interesting way to explore the properties of magnetism.
In the eighteen hundreds, we did not know as much about our world as we do now. There were sixteen elements on the periodic table that were thought to be rare. Neodymium and cerium were included in those elements that were once considered rare. As science and exploration progressed, it was discovered that these elements were not rare after all. However, the name stuck. These elements are used in magnets and have many interesting aspects.
Rare earth elements are used with other materials like iron to create powerful magnets. The name of the magnet often refers to the material used, such as neodymium magnets. What makes these magnets special is their amazingly strong magnetic field. It surpasses most magnets that we typically use on a daily basis, like refrigerator magnets. Unlike other magnets that will eventually lose their magnetic field, magnets rare earth do not unless subjected to very high temperatures.
Of these rare earth magnets, there are two that are the most common. Neodymium magnets are the most powerful available. They are also cost effective, which is another reason for their popularity. Cobalt magnets are also commonly used. These are brittle, but can withstand high temperatures. They are usually used in industrial settings.
There are some important things to keep in mind when using such strong magnets. They are actually strong enough to cause damage to both people and objects. Their strength is such that pinch injuries can occur. Skin can get caught between opposing magnets and become injured. This is especially true for children, who have smaller fingers. It is important to follow any age requirements when giving a rare earth magnet set as a toy; supervision is also necessary. While their magnetic field is strong, the actual magnet itself is not. They can shatter, and shards can get stuck in skin. It is also not wise to use these magnets around electronic devices. The magnetic field can damage some of the components. Take care to note the size of the magnet as well; the bigger they are the more powerful they tend to be.
