what exactly are g-forces?
i keep hearing this a lot. people say its acceleration. but from my knowledge acceleration is measured in metres per second squared. what exactly is this concept of g-forces? as applied to roller coasters and aircraft etc.. im confused. please help.
Yes, g measures acceleration. So 2g is twice the acceleration due to gravity and Ng is N times the acceleration due to gravity.
So if you have mass m and experience N g's, the force on you is:
F = ma = N mg or N times your weight.
If you weigh 150 lbs and are pulling 10 g's, it feels like 1500 lbs sitting on you. If your hand weighs a couple pounds, it will weigh 20 pounds in 10g's which might make holding the stick and controlling the plane much more challenging. The blood in your body weighs 10 times as much, and your heart might not be able to get it all the way up to your brain, causing you to black out.
Usually the way this comes about is that your frame of reference accelerates. If your figher plane turns really hard, you'll experience a centrifugal force that might be many g's. If you are in a satellite, the centrifugal force is equal and opposite the gravitational force, so they cancel and you experience zero g's which is lots of fun.
