What is your greatest enemy to business success?
Most stumbling blocks to achievement are attitude related. We are afraid to get started because we might fail. Or we might succeed -- and be expected to achieve even more. Or we're too shy to ask for help. Or we don't think we're good enough. Or we don't like the discomfort of being in unfamiliar territory or dealing with unpleasant situations. Welcome to reality. It's the hard jobs that make us.
The best thing about attitudinal blocks is they are the easiest to overcome, once you determine to do it. Here's how:
Focus. Obstacles are those frightening things you see when you take your eyes off the goal. Like walking a narrow bridge across a gorge, you focus on where you want to go, then put one foot in front of another until you get there.
Be prepared. The more that is left to chance, the less chance there is for success. Find out what other people did to accomplish similar goals and model their success. Knowing what you're about combats fear of failure.
Practice success. The human mind is magnificently adept at repeating the process once learned, whether in reality or imagination. Like golfers who improve their scores by mentally rehearsing their shots, you can mentally rehearse the steps to any success. Your mind will record the achievement and will follow that path in reality.
Stick your neck out. The quickest way to acquire self-confidence is to do exactly what you're afraid to do. The person who tries something and fails is a step ahead of the one who tries nothing.
Recognize the value in failure. Nothing worthwhile is achieved without patience, labor and disappointment. Success is picking yourself up one more time than you fall down. If you view each mistake not as failure but as feedback, you'll realize, like Thomas Edison, the you've simply learned one more way not to do it.
Give yourself an attitude check every morning. Like taking a vitamin, do what ever it takes to gain a positive frame of mind.
Rally your resources. Getting more done is not so much a goal of time management as resource management. Focus your resources -- time, money, energy, knowledge and people -- toward positive action. Waste not a minute whining, blaming, or following negative pursuits.
