White gold ring has been increasing in popularity for wedding or engagement ring because it looks fresher, with an affordable price.
White gold ring can be used for men and women. Some men said that they prefer to wear white gold ring than yellow gold ring because it looks more neutral and not too flashy, so they do not mind to use them in daily activities.
Before you buy white gold ring, it’s good to know some fact about it.
What is white gold ring?
White gold ring is a mixture of gold with other materials, such as silver, nickel or palladium. The reason why gold have to be mixed with other materials is because “white” is not a natural color of gold, so it must be mixed with other materials to make it white. Besides that, pure gold (24K) is too soft, so it must be mixed with other materials that harder than gold. This means 14K gold ring is slightly harder than 18K gold ring, because 14K gold ring contains more percentage of harder metal than 18K gold ring.
White Gold Ring Quality and Rhodium Plating
Rhodium plating often used to enhance the white color of white gold ring. Anyway, best quality white gold ring does not require rhodium plating to make it white. Nickel can cause allergies in some people, so I suggest you to use white gold ring with a mixture of palladium. However, if you have sensitive skin, you can still use nickel containing white gold ring with a condition that the ring is coated with rhodium, because rhodium is a hypo-allergenic material.
Maintenance
After some period of constant use, the color of white gold ring can be dull, and the color changed to green or yellow in some parts. When this happens, you only need to bring it to the jeweler to replated / recoated with rhodium with a reasonable price. For everyday maintenance, you may use warm water (do not use boiling water), soft brush and mild soap (I recommend that you use detergent free soap) to clean your white gold ring.

Can I melt a yellow gold ring and line the inside of a white gold ring with it?
I have already purchased a white gold band for my husband's wedding band. I have a small gold band that I'd like to melt down to line the inside of the white gold band. Anyone know if this can be done?
Not planning on doing it myself. Should have worded this better. Is this something I could have done by a jeweler?
Gold melts at 1,947F, well above any temperature you are likely to produce in your home. Contact a jeweler.
I'm not a jeweler myself, so I'm not sure how hard it would be to do. You might have to make the white gold band bigger to accomodate the gold band inside and still fit it on your husband's finger. Any competent jeweler can advise you of the alternatives.
