Simple Ways to Get Rid of Head Lice

Please realize that head lice are not infectious or dangerous.  However, they are very annoying—and contagious—and irritating, and a child's scratching can escalate to the point of broken skin, resulting in an infected area.

The good news is that the lice do not spread any kind of disease.

Although lice do not spread disease, their drawing out scalp blood often causes the child to itch and the scalp to be inflamed.  Infections, however, do not come from the lice, but from habitual scratching of their irritation by the child.

Head lice are very tiny, but they are still visible to the naked eye, if you know what to look for.  At first, you may suspect dandruff, but if you cannot shake it out, you have found lice eggs (called nits).  They are usually off-white, tan, yellow or sometimes brown prior to hatching, when they are more white or even clear in appearance.

Nits are laid close to the scalp and glued to the hair by the mother louse.  The warmth of the scalp is what allows to eggs to hatch in about  seven to ten days.

Unless your child is heavily infested, you will probably not see  any adult lice in the hair.  These are tan or a whitish grey in color, but their lifespan is pretty short—just about a month long.  Even in full maturity, they are only about the size of a sesame seed.

The lice diet consists wholly of human blood, so without a host head, they can survive only a short period, no more than 24-48 hours.

Lice bites cause annoying itching, followed by intense scratching by the victim most of the time, although some children are not bothered as much as others.

If you find either red bumps or little sores on the scalp, that is a result of scratching, not the bites themselves.  It is the scratching that causes a child to have more serious sores, which usually need no more than a good antibiotic cream or lotion applied daily.

If you section off your kid's hair and use a bright light—maybe even a magnifying glass—look behind her ears and at the nape of her neck.  Even though adult lice cannot fly or jump, they can move very quickly, so it is hard to really get a good look at them.

If you do find that your child has lice, notify the school nurse immediately, and also ask if there is a current infestation of lice throughout the school.  Since head lice are extremely contagious it may be that informing the other parents at the school will cut down on the instances, since ordinary activities like slumber parties and sports can be reduced and/or monitored.

Now, as mentioned above, lice cannot move except by crawling from head to head (or personal item to personal item), and they are not easily removed because of their claws, which makes it easy for them to cling to the hair.  So children should be taught to refrain from sharing personal stuff like brushes and combs, hats, etc.

And don't worry about your pets having brought head lice into the house.  That will never happen, because head lice are exclusive to humans—it is our blood they seek to feast on!

Should you opt to take your child to a physician, you're probably going to get a prescription for a pesticide, and I ask you, do you really wish to subject your child to that when so many alternatives are out there that do not involve chemicals?

Plus, a second reason not to go this route is that today's head lice are virtually immune to most of the prescribed pesticides, rendering them ineffective.  In addition, many of them carry side effects that natural remedies do not.

Also, if you have a child under two or three years old, you should never use these medicinal pesticides.  Opt for only the natural alternatives and a metal nit comb to remove the eggs from your child's hair every day for a minimum of ten days to assure that the lice are history.

Suffocate head lice with either petroleum jelly or olive oil overnight (using a shower cap to keep it off the bedding), and next morning comb thoroughly with a good fine-toothed nit comb.  Even though both Vaseline and olive oil are no fun to get out of the hair, they do a good job on the lice.

It is more common for girls to be infested with head lice because their hair is usually longer, and this happens most often when the girls are between three and twelve years.

Clean your house as you work to rid your children of these pests, but this need not be a big deal.  Common sense is going to tell you what needs attention, like the child's bed linens and upholstered furniture.

Since head lice cannot survive more than two days without a human host, the adults all die off anyway, but it's the nits (eggs) that may hatch within the next seven to ten days, so to zap those little buggers, put everything that needs to be cleaned into a hot dryer for 20-30 minutes, and that should do it.  Anything that cannot be laundered stick in a large plastic bag, seal it with a twist tie, and keep it in the bag for two weeks.

Caution:  Do not use a blow dryer on the hair if the lice removal solution you have chosen is flammable—again, common sense.

If you have opted for a prescription lice medication, do not wash the hair before applying it or for two days after using the medication, or the impotency of the product may be exacerbated.

Also, please do not employ the same prescribed medication more than three times on the infested head—and never combine these insecticides—again, let common sense prevail!

As to prevention, the most you can do is to encourage your children not to have direct contact with another kid's head during play, camping, slumber parties, games, or sports, as well as telling them about not sharing combs and brushes, hats and scarves, towels or even helmets and pillows with others.

Also, if it is known that certain children have head lice, discourage your kids from being near them until the problem has been remedied—and also keep a close watch out for lice on your own kids.
